University of California has launched an initiative to use artificial intelligence drones to detect shark activity at Padaro Beach.
The faculty and students have developed AI-powered drones called SharkEye that can detect along California’s beaches to provide real-time alerts to beachgoers.
Shark Detecting AI
The Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (BOSL) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has launched a project that can analyze video footage to detect sharks.
The sharks can be detected even if they are a couple of feet under the ocean.
SharkEye drones send immediate text messages to around 80 registered users when a shark is detected.
Human Observation Reduced
Researchers claimed that the lifeguards won’t need to monitor screens all the time now as SharkEye’s AI technology can quickly and accurately spot sharks, even in bright sunlight or murky water.
The drones are part of a broader trend of using drones for beach safety, with similar initiatives in New York and Sydney.
