EU Strips Hungary of Hosting Rights For Meeting Putin

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, has revoked Hungary‘s right to host the next meeting of foreign and defense ministers due to its stance on the Ukraine war.

The decision follows Hungary’s recent assumption of the rotating presidency of the EU council and the PM Viktor Orban’s controversial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Symbolic Signal

Borrell stated that Hungary’s actions necessitate consequences, saying, “we have to send a signal, even if it is a symbolic signal.”

Borrell emphasized the need to respond to Orban’s accusation that the EU has a “pro-war policy,” suggesting that “all member states – with one single exception – are very much critical about this behavior.”

Hungary Dismissed The Decision

Hungary in response dismissed the move as “completely childish.”

This incident is the latest in a series of clashes between Hungary and the EU over responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Hungary has been resisting the EU’s stance on aiding Ukraine, much like Donald Trump in the US, experts say.
