A blind hiker and his guide dog were rescued by the Coast Guard after being stranded on an Oregon trail for several days.
The 55-year-old man, legally blind, was hiking with his dog and a friend along Oregon’s Rogue River Trail, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest.
Trail Takes Four Days To Complete
The trail, which stretches 40 miles between Grave Creek and Big Bend, usually takes four or five days to complete, says the U.S. Forest Service.
The hike began on July 3 or 4 and on July 6, the man began showing symptoms of heat exhaustion in a remote area as his friend called 911 for help.
US Coast Guard Called
The Oregon authorities had to call the US Coast Guard as the man was unable to walk, and the steep terrain made a stretcher impractical.
A Coast Guard crew deployed a rescue swimmer who reached the man and his dog, hoisting them up to a helicopter.
