Bolivian police have arrested 17 people including the heads of army and navy for allegedly trying to overthrow a democratic government.
Bolivia, a South American country gripped by severe economic crisis and unemployment, saw an unprecedent day when the people dressed in military uniform tried to storm the presidential palace.
Bolivia Arrests Coup Plotters
At least 17 people were arrested by the Bolivian police accused of plotting a coup against the government.
The coup attempt, led by Gen Juan José Zúñiga, was a brief and poorly managed mutiny, which lasted only about three hours and reportedly saw 12 people injured, media reports said.
Zúñiga said, “the president (Luis Arce) told me the situation was f**ked and that he needed something to boost his popularity”.
President & General Met A Day Before
Bolivia’s minister of government, Eduardo Del Castillo, said in an interview that the President Arce & Zúñiga had met a day before to discuss things in private.
The minister claimed that the President relieved the former general from his duties because his conduct was not in line with the constitution.
