A US luxury real estate billionaire and a deep-sea explorer plan to explore the Titanic using a submersible.
Ohio tycoon Larry Connor and Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey aim to descend to around 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) to view the shipwreck in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Duo Planned Dive After OceanGate Disaster
The duo decided to go on a deep sea adventure after the disastrous incident of OceanGate that killed five people who were stranded for days thousands of feet inside.
Mr. Lahey told the Business Insider that Mr. Connor rang him a few times after the tragedy and asked him to build a safe and certified submersible and show the world that Triton Submarines can do this.
OceanGate Tragedy
The submersible industry faced scrutiny after an OceanGate vessel imploded last year, killing five people en route to the Titanic including the CEO.
Connor’s company announced on Tuesday that their expedition would proceed only with a fully certified vessel.
The duo plans to use the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, capable of reaching depths of 4,000 meters.
In contrast, OceanGate’s Titan submarine, made of carbon fiber, was certified for only 1,300 meters.
