A large, eerie skull fragment with jagged, teeth-like edges washed ashore on the bank of North Carolina’s beach on Wednesday.
The discovery shocked residents living nearby but questions were finally answered by the US National Park Service.
The NPS, which oversees this Atlantic coastal region, reported that the skull fragment measures roughly 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall and is actually a whale’s skull.
Authorities Advised Not To Remove The Skull
They have advised against attempting to remove the fragment as they intend to use it for education display.
They explained that humpback whales have specialized skull structures to support their unique feeding behaviors.
Although the fragment’s jagged edges resemble teeth, they are likely parts that once connected the skull to another body part.
N. Carolina Has A History
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is known for its history, hurricanes, and shipwrecks, and is also a hotspot for marine mammal activity.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), at least 30 humpback whales have died along the North Carolina coast since 2016.
