TikTok and its parent company ByteDance has filed a lawsuit challenging a recent law that seeks to ban the social media platform in the US.
The company wants to reverse a bill assigned by the US President that has given two options to the video streaming platform: sell TikTok or face a permanent ban.
The company said in the lawsuit that the law infringes on the free speech rights of 170 million Americans that are currently using the platform.
TikTok Sues US Law
US lawmakers have been debating whether to impose a ban on TikTok over national security grounds, an argument the company says is “speculative”.
The US argues that the company has deep ties with the Chinese government and is potentially sharing US data with the ruling CCP (Chinese Communist Party).
This is the first time that the US has signed out a social media platform for a potential ban, the lawsuit argues.
TikTok has repeatedly rejected ties with the Chinese government and states it works independently.
