Russia is Jamming GPS To Target Thousands of Commercial Flights

Russia is reportedly disrupting Global Positioning System, affecting thousands of civilian flights across regions where its military activity is most intense, experts told the BBC.

The report by the BBC mentioned that the jamming is targeting thousands of commercial aircrafts flying near Russian territory.

Targeted Regions

The Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and eastern Mediterranean have experienced heightened disruption to the GPS, for being close to the Russian mainland.

In March, a RAF plane carrying Defense Secretary Grant Shapps had its GPS signal jammed near Russian territory when he was on his way to Poland.

Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna openly blames Russia for GPS jamming and says it clearly violates international agreements.

Why Russia is Jamming The GPS?

The reason is obvious, Russia is defending itself from Ukrainian missiles and drone strikes in Ukraine and inside Russia.

Keir Giles, director of the Conflict Studies Research Centre, told the BBC that although Ukrainians have found ways to bypass Russian jamming efforts, Moscow still benefits from it.
