According to a survey report released by Japan’s health ministry on Friday, the number of homeless individuals in the country dropped to record low by 8.0%.
The number of people living on streets dropped from the previous year to 2,820 as of January, marking the lowest level since the government started recording the numbers.
Why Has Japan’s Homeless Population Dropped?
The ministry attributed this improvement to successful support measures implemented by the successive governments.
Among the homeless population, men comprised 2,575 individuals, while there were 172 women. The gender of 73 individuals still remains unknown as the ministry didn’t clarify.
The highest numbers of homeless individuals by prefecture were reported in Osaka (856), Tokyo (624), and Kanagawa (420).
The number of homeless individuals have gradually decreased in the country for the past few years, as shown by annual reports released by the Japanese authorities.
