New research shows that a traditional Japanese diet that is rich in fish and soya beans can fight off cognitive decline and dementia.
Japan has the most number of centurions in the world, and most of this is credited to the way Japanese people manage their diets, the research said.
What makes this diet unique are traditional Japanese foods such as miso (fermented soybean paste), seaweed, pickles, green tea, soybeans, soybeans sprouts and mushrooms with less to no use of red meat.
Diet Helps Women More Than Men
For the research study, scientists studied a sample of 1,636 Japanese people aged 40 to 89.
In the end, researchers noted that those who consumed a traditional Japanese diet had less signs of cognitive decline in MRI scans.
One striking feature that really shocked the research lead author Shu Zhang was the fact that women were the primary beneficiary of the traditional diet as compared to men.
