The latest study suggests that only 57 companies have been responsible for more than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016.
The report revealed a shocking emissions increase right after the crucial 2016 Paris climate agreement.
Although countries promised to decrease GHG emissions in the agreement, the analysis shows that most giants increased their output of fossil fuels in the last seven years.
All scientists and academics agree that fossil fuel emissions from oil and gas companies are the primary drivers of climate crisis.
65% Are State Owned Companies
The analysis published by the Carbon Majors Database indicates that the majority, around 65%, of the entities responsible for these emissions are state-owned corporations.
Out of the total 122 polluters studied, “the researchers found that 65% of state entities and 55% of private-sector companies,” the report said.
Richard Heede, the founder of the Carbon Majors dataset in 2013, mentioned that it is beyond comprehension that the entities mentioned would continue to emit GHG despite knowing that their products harm the environment.
