The US has deployed Marines to help protect US diplomatic and embassy staff in Haiti as the situation spirals out of control.
The anti-terrorism team of US Marines, known as FAST, has been dispatched to tighten the security around US diplomatic buildings and protect embassy staff in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
US Deploys Marines
The U.S. Southern Command said the contingent of Marines had landed in the Haitian capital to shore up security amid deportation of the country’s security.
The center of violence is the Haitian capital, which has seen police offices, prisons, and government buildings being destroyed and many killed.
Background
The United States started worrying about its mission and staff in Haiti after violence erupted between government security agencies and rival gangs.
Haiti is currently under the influence of two rival gangs which have opposed any foreign intervention.
The US is making sure its forces are not directly involved in the crisis and facilitating a smooth transition.
