Scientists have warned that Greenland’s melted ice sheets are now producing vegetation, a dangerous sign of rapid melting of glaciers.
Scientists said the ice sheet is melting due to the rapid release of greenhouse gasses, directly putting the lives of millions of people at risk.
A scientific study published in the journal Scientific Reports has documented the change in the last 45 years and shown that large areas of ice have been replaced with barren rocks and vegetation.
11,000 Sq Miles Melted
An estimated 11,000 square miles of Greenland’s ice sheet have melted in the last three decades, the satellite imagery published in the report showed.
The melted region is equivalent to the size of Albania, which amounts to 1.6% of Greenland’s overall ice cover.
Earth scientist and a co-author in the study, Jonathan Carrivick, said the satellite images were shocking as thousands of miles were lost to unsustainable lifestyles and fossil fuels.
