Thousands of protesters are fighting a proposal that seeks to expand an airport in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The Indian billionaire Gautam Adani bought the 330-acre multi-purpose port Kattupalli, who now wants to expand the airport by 18 folds to 6,110 acres.
The villagers are protesting the move as it will hamper their economic situation.
Villagers Protesting Billionaire’s Move
The Indian billionaire acquired the port in 2018, which was built by Indian conglomerate Larson & Toubro (L&T).
The port located in Tiruvallur district along the Bay of Bengal coast is situated at an important intersection upon which thousands of villagers are dependent for their livelihoods.
The villagers believe that further expansion of the port will submerge their lands and diminish their potential to earn a living.
Environmentalists have also discouraged the expansion of the port suggesting the move will cause massive coastal erosion and a loss of biodiversity.
