France has encouraged its citizens to avoid buying new clothes on Black Friday sales.
Some people within the government have criticized the decision, but the government said it’ll help the environment.
The French minister initiated the campaign for ecological transition to help people save money and help the environment.
Shopping Harms The Environment
The Macron-led government suggested that citizens avoid shopping for clothes by launching an eco-friendly campaign.
The environmentalist campaign was launched by Christophe Béchu, French minister for ecological transition.
Mr. Béchu put out a video advertisement suggesting people boycott buying clothes on Black Friday to promote sustainable living.
French Union Strikes Back
The French Union of Fashion and Clothing Industries and the Union of Textile Industries issued a joint statement condemning the government’s campaign.
“We ask for its immediate withdrawal, failing which we will consider legal action for commercial denigration,” it said. Mr. Béchu acknowledged his ill-conceived advert but said he wouldn’t put it down.
