Maui Island Becomes A Ghost-Town As Death Toll Jumps To 80

Death toll from the wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui jumped to 80, as per the latest reports. Wildfire authorities are still shocked at the rapid devastation caused by the wildfires in a short span of time on the island. The death toll is expected to rise further as the fires are still blazing in multiple places.

Images and maps by the BBC show utter devastation unleashed by wildfires coupled with strong winds. Beautiful resort places, hotels, restaurants, residence buildings were destroyed in the US worst natural disaster on record. According to the Hawaii Governor Josh Green, more than 80% of the historic town of Lahaina is gone with more than 1,500 buildings completely wrecked.

Electricity & Communications Cut Off

The island administration has not been able to restore electricity to more than 11,000 people still stuck on the island. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated but the speed of fires are making it harder for firefighters to communicate, Andrew Rumbach, a former professor of urban planning said.
