New Zealand Becomes World’s First Country To Ban Thin Plastic

New Zealand has become the world’s first country to ban the production of thin plastics. The country has taken several climate-friendly measures in the last few years in order to curb items that harm the environment.

Paper Bags Still Available

In order to make things more sustainable and environment-friendly, the government urged its citizens to use paper bags that are still available at the market. New Zealand banned thick single-use plastics in 2019, which saved the country around one billion plastic bags. The new ban on thin plastics is expected to further deplete the usage by 150 million bags per year, New Zealand’s Environment Minister Rachel Brooking said.

New Zealand Produces Too Much Waste

According to government estimates, each New Zealander sends more than a quarter of a ton of waste to the landfills every year. The government ban is aimed at reducing the waste numbers to make the country cleaner, happier and healthier. An Australian owned Supermarket chain Countdown has already started using reusable bags to serve its customers.
