Twitter’s co-founder Jack Dorsey has said that the Indian government once threatened to shut down twitter and raid employees’ homes. He said Modi’s government has requested the platform to restrict and remove accounts that were critical of the government on numerous occasions.
World’s Largest Democracy
Despite being labeled as the world’s largest democracy, the Indian government has been accused of censorship by multiple international organizations. Dorsey recalled that he remembered being threatened by the Indian government, to either suspend hundreds of accounts or they’ll shut down the platform. Twitter didn’t suspend any accounts and sued the Indian government in the Karnataka High Court in Bengaluru.
India Rejected Accusations
In response to Dorsey’s comments, India’s deputy minister for information technology termed his comments an “outright lie”. The Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the Indian government didn’t threaten anyone and the comments of Dorsey were misleading.
