A tanker crossing underneath the overpass burst into flames and caused the overpass in Philadelphia to collapse. The overpass is one of the busiest in the US with approximately 160,000 vehicles transverse the highway on a daily basis. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were reported in the incident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
Remarkable Devastation
Huge chunk of the overpass collapsed over the commercial truck which burst into flames just beneath the overpass. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro held a long press conference to deliver the message to this community, describing the scenes as “devastating”. He said the complete buildup of the highway would take months to become fully functional.
Millions Impacted
The overpass plays an important role in bridging major cities along the US East Coast, from Maine to southern Florida and authorities are anticipating the huge impact. “You are literally going to have millions of people in what is one of the largest population centers”, a district democrat Rep. Brendan Boyle told CNN.
