US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has said that social media poses an immediate threat to the youth of the United States. The new advisory from the US surgeon general wrote that although we lack evidence, the impact of social media on the mental health of children and adolescents is huge.
Profound Risk of Harm
The 25-page advisory mentioned that social media consumption posed “a profound risk of harm” to our kids and overall youth. He also said that our young generation is in the middle of a mental health crisis and social media is the most contributing factor to the crisis.
Youth Is Addicted
The advisory cited some research that revealed the effects of social media on young brains. The report also mentioned how social media can intervene in the process of early brain development at sensitive times when the human brain can’t comprehend the complex algorithms running behind social media platforms.
