Top US health official has said that the US has an epidemic of loneliness which needs proper focus from the authorities. Vivek Hallegere Murthy, an American physician termed the issue a health crisis which is more dangerous than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Epidemic of Loneliness
A report by the Surgeon General mentioned that social isolation has become an epidemic in the US. The condition is connected to heart diseases, strokes, dementia and depression, the report said. The report titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation” mentioned that about half of the US adults were lonely.
More Dangerous Than Smoking
Loneliness, unlike as it seems, is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes because of the ills associated with it. Surgeon Murphy said that the issue is more concerning as it is equivalent to smoking around 15 cigarettes a day.
