Chinese scientists have discovered a water reservoir on the moon trapped inside tiny beads. The scientists are expecting billions of tones of water inside cooled rocks on the surface of the moon. The discovery was made possible due to China’s Chang’e-5 mission, the only Chinese mission to bring back samples to earth.
Solar Wind-Derived Water
According to the Chinese planetary scientists, the water is a result of solar winds on the surface of the moon. The glass beads created by the asteroid impacts when it reacts with solar hydrogen, thus creating water molecules trapped inside the minerals.
China’s Chang’e-5 Probe
China’s robotic Chang’e-5 mission successfully landed on the moon in 2020 aiming to bring back moon samples weighing around 3 kilos, to be studied back on earth. The mission is named after a Chinese moon goddess and will help scientists investigate the origins of the moon and possibilities of humanity’s survival in the near future.
