Hungary Threatens To Veto Aid To Ukraine

Hungary’s foreign minister stated that his country, a EU member, will veto the donation of EU recovery funds to Ukraine. He reaffirmed Hungary’s bilateral support for Ukraine while opposing joint action together with other EU member states.

The EU is set to propose such a program on Wednesday. The package is expected to contain €18 Billion in aid for the coming year, reports Bloomberg. The aid would be financed from EU funds, which requires changes to the current rules, which in turn can be vetoed by any single of the 27 member states.

In the past Hungary supported a similar proposal for EU debt backed COVID recovery funds. But Hungary has still not yet received any of these funds.
