The Biggest Explosion Ever Recorded In Space

On the morning on October 14, 2022, the biggest and most powerful explosions ever recorded occurred in space.

Gamma-Ray Burst GRB221009A

This record-breaking event, which happened 2.4 billion light-years from Earth and was likely caused by a supernova explosion giving birth to a black hole, was discovered for the first time on October 9, 2022, by orbiting X-ray and gamma-ray observatories.

How Was The Explosion Captured?

The brilliant, glowing remnants of the explosion were detected and targeted by two separate teams using the Gemini South telescope in Chile, one of the twin telescopes of the International Gemini Observatory run by NSF’s NOIRLab.

Does This Affect Us On Earth?

No.

This is too far to even reach Earth. But Earth is always blasted with gamma-rays when our atmosphere protects us from it.
