6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southeast Taiwan

The Taiwanese buildings have been constantly shaking for the past 24 hours. There were a total 20 earthquakes in the past 24 hours in Taiwan. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Taiwan’s south-eastern part today causing 700 people trapped in buildings. The rescue work is going on for the remaining victims of the earthquake. The earthquake hit at 2:44pm having a total depth of around 10km so far, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Rescue Work Underway

According to the initial reports there are no reported deaths except roadblocks and railway incidents. Passengers were evacuated before anything could happen. Recent reports have not yet confirmed the death toll caused by the earthquake. Six Train vehicles came off the rails at Dongli station in eastern Taiwan after part of it collapsed,’’ The Taiwan Railways Administration said.

Japan Issues Tsunami Warning

Right after the earthquake in Taiwan, the Meteorological Agency of Japan issued a Tsunami warning to one of its Islands in the East China Sea, about 2,000km southwest of Tokyo near Taiwan. Later the warning was cancelled.
