On Saturday, ten people were killed in a racially motivated mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket. Payton S. Gendron, an 18-year-old White man, has been charged with first-degree murder, according to authorities. In court on Saturday night, he pled not guilty.
Authorities said the suspect drove to Tops Friendly Markets near Masten Park and Kingsley, which are predominantly Black communities, at approximately 2:30 p.m. The suspect is from Conklin, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Buffalo in Western New York.
According to Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn, the suspect, dressed in tactical gear and armed with an assault weapon, shot and killed three individuals in the parking lot and wounded a fourth.
The man then entered the store and exchanged gunfire with a retired Buffalo Police Department security guard, according to the statement.
The guard’s rounds had no effect on the suspect since he was wearing heavy tactical gear, Gramaglia said Saturday.
