A Ukrainian broadcaster has been recruited by German broadcaster RTL to host a daily news show for other refugees from the Russian invasion of their homeland.
It was announced that Karolina Ashion will host a 10-minute Ukrainian-language news program from Monday through Friday, which will address almost 200,000 Ukrainians who have already arrived in Germany this month.
It’s important for us to reach out to the people who are fleeing right now, who must leave their homeland, and may not speak English; this is why RTL’s “Ukraine Update” program offers news in Ukrainian.
This will allow them to learn more about what is going on in their country currently, and what is the political climate there.
After an exhausting journey from Kyiv via Moldova and Romania, Ashion only arrived in Germany about a week ago.
Her male colleagues are still broadcasting from a bomb shelter in Kiev, since they can’t leave the country if they are between the ages of 18 and 60.
It has been a whole new experience in my life,” Ashion said. “But I’m Ukrainian and I can be a voice of freedom for the people. I can be for everyone hurt by this (war).
By hiring more Ukrainian journalists, RTL plans to continue expanding its Ukraine Update news program. The show can be viewed on various RTL and N-TV platforms as well as YouTube.
