Mexican cartel boss 'El Marro' receives 60-year prison sentence

According to state prosecutors, the country’s top cartel boss, known as “El Marro,” was sentenced to 60 years in prison on Friday.

In 2020, Jose Antonio Yepez was arrested back as one of Mexico’s most wanted criminals, Reuters reported. The leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel in Guanajuato, Reuters reported.

Yapez and his gang were alleged to have stolen large quantities of petroleum, and fanning the flames of violence in the central state.

In the state, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel feuded with his cartel in a bloody turf war, according to Reuters.

According to the attorney general’s office in Guanajuato, the court “found him and his co-authors guilty” of kidnapping.

Yepez’s arrest was Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s highest profile drug arrest to date, and the president has pledged to lower petroleum theft and crime.

According to Reuters, Yepez’s group engaged in a range of illegal activities, including kidnappings and drug smugglings.
