The freshly installed George Floyd sculpture in New York City’s Union Square has already been damaged.
According to NBC New York, blue paint was splashed over Floyd’s bust about 10 a.m. Sunday. According to police, the security video shows someone mixing paint behind the artwork before defacing it and fleeing.
The sculpture, along with sculptures of Rep. John Lewis and Breonna Taylor, was unveiled on Thursday.
Floyd’s monument had been on exhibit in Brooklyn, where it had been vandalized as well. On Juneteenth, the artwork was revealed. It was damaged with black paint and tagged with the insignia of a white nationalist organization five days later, on June 24.
Efforts to clean up the area are now underway.
