Following an official investigation on alleged sexual harassment of 11 women by Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, President Joe Biden asked Cuomo to resign on Tuesday.
New York State House Speaker Carl Heastie, a Democrat, stated shortly after Biden’s statement that the house will aim to finish its impeachment investigation of the governor as soon as possible.
Biden joined virtually every other prominent Democratic legislator in Albany and Washington in calling for Cuomo’s resignation. But, coming from the top of the Democratic Party, Biden’s proposal carries more weight than others.
Following the President’s statements, Cuomo’s press office did not reply to a request for comment.
Cuomo was found guilty in a report issued Tuesday by state Attorney General Letitia James, which detailed a months-long investigation.
James said at a press conference that Cuomo “sexually harassed multiple women, and in doing so violated federal and state law”.
Later Tuesday, a solemn but furious Cuomo vehemently rejected some of the claims, claiming that other instances of his alleged misbehavior had been mischaracterized or misunderstood.
Cuomo maintained tight connections with the Trump and subsequently the Biden administrations during the Covid-19 epidemic.
He was praised for how he was able to handle and control the pandemic situation in New York, one of the worst cities in American hit by the pandemic.
Should Biden decide not to seek re-election in 2024, he was considered as a possible Democratic presidential candidacy.
