Gordon Sondland, President Donald Trump’s former ambassador to the European Union, is suing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the United States government for $1.8 million in legal bills spent during the 2019 House impeachment investigation.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in the District of Columbia on Monday, claims that Pompeo broke his pledge to repay the expenses after Sondland provided explosive evidence accusing Trump and his advisors of urging the Ukrainian government to probe then-presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter in exchange for military help.
In 2020, Sondland testified that he believed the Trump administration tied military funding to whether Ukraine’s government would probe Joe and Hunter Biden. Sondland said he worked on Ukraine issues with Rudy Giuliani “at the express direction” of President Trump.
