Before even getting investigated, Congressman Matt Gaetz asked Trump for a pardon. The Representative from Florida was one of President Donald J. Trump’s most vocal allies during his term.
Gaetz wanted a blanket pre-emptive pardons in the final weeks of Trump’s presidency. According to two people familiar with the report, he secretly pressed the White House for pardons for himself and unnamed congressional allies.
It was uncertain if Gaetz or anyone from the White House were aware of the investigation at the time, or anyone else he wanted pardons for.
In the New York Time article, it is stated that some Trump associates have speculated that Gaetz request for a group pardon was an attempt to camouflage his own potential criminal exposure.
