Trial of George Floyd’s Murder Begins

Opening statements in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd last May by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes, begin today in Minneapolis.

Floyd’s death sparked a global outpouring of grief causing many people in different cities all over the world to protest against racism and social injustice.

In preparation for protest, National Guard forces have been deployed to the courthouse, which is also lined by steel walls, fences, barbed, and razor wire.

Chauvin faces second-and third-degree murder charges, as well as manslaughter.
