New York To Legalize Marijuana

On Saturday night, the representatives of New York’s state Senate and Assembly proposed bills to regulate and regulate recreational cannabis in the Empire State.

According to the bill, individuals over the age of 21 will be allowed to buy laboratory-tested marijuana, which will be subject to a 9% excise tax, a 4% locality tax, and an extra tax depending on THC content.

State Sen. Liz Krueger (D) said in a statement that the draft law, which could be debated as early as next week, seeks to “repair the heavily unequal effect that prohibition enforcement has had on communities of color in New York.”

According to NBC News, provisions entail allocating 40% of proceeds to areas adversely impacted by the opioid war, compulsory expungement of records for individuals with criminal arrests, and the removal of fines for cannabis possession of fewer than three ounces.
