Working from an office has always been the norm for years and years and generations and generations. But is that all about to change?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people (and offices) have switched to working from home. This has benefited the next generation as they are able to work more while enjoying the comfort of their home.
According to a new study from the Pew Research Center, over two years into the COVID-19 epidemic, roughly 6 in 10 U.S. workers who claim their tasks can be done from home, or 59 percent, do so all or most of the time. More workers now claim they work from home because they want to rather than because they have to.
Why The Next Generation Will Only Work From Home?
According to a recent survey from Citrix Systems, persons born after 1981, known as the “Born Digital” age, are less interested in working full-time in offices and are far more tech-savvy than previous generations.
There are a lot of benefits from working from home.
For employees, one of the biggest benefits of working from home is better productivity. In a 2014 research headed by Stanford professor Nicholas Bloom, remote employees at a Chinese travel firm were found to be 13 percent more productive than their office-based counterparts.
This could be due to less time traveling to and from the office, a cleaner and safer work environment at home, and better work and personal life balance.
Why Do Companies Want To Be Full-Time Work From Home?
The biggest benefit for companies to go full-time work from home is to save money.
According to a Harvard Business School working paper from November, the US Patent and Trademark Office saved more than $38 million in 2015 by not utilizing as much office space.
According to another research, allowing an employee to work from home half of the time would save the company an average of $11,000 per employee, with each individual saving between $2,000 and $7,000.
Our Opinion
The next generation is already a very high-tech and fast learning generation. They would benefit the most with work from home jobs while producing the best results.
It makes sense for companies to save money by switching to remote or working from home full-time. It also makes sense if their employees are more productive and efficient if they work from home.
This might take years before we see no office space but the pandemic has already speeded this process and we are headed in the direction where many companies will allow and encourage their employees to work full time from home.
