Government officials say 16 people have been killed at a nightclub in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé after a fire broke out.
It was an accident caused by fireworks used in the club, according to officials.
There were at least eight other serious injuries suffered during the early morning fire at Liv’s Night Club on Sunday. In the capital’s upmarket Bastos district, the main room of the entertainment venue was engulfed by fire.
The explosions from fireworks often used in these places caused the tragedy, the government’s communications ministry said in a statement. First, the building’s ceiling was consumed, resulting in two loud explosions, causing panic and a stampede. AFP news agency reports.
