Man Drives Car Into Pedestrians In Italy, Injuring Eight

The car was driving at very high speed.

A normal Saturday afternoon in Modena turned into chaos in seconds — and left a city asking how things escalated so fast.

A 31-year-old man drove a car into pedestrians in northern Italy, injuring eight people, four of them seriously.

Among the victims was a woman who suffered devastating injuries and had both legs amputated, officials said.

But the violence didn’t end there. After crashing into a shop window, the driver reportedly got out of the vehicle holding a knife.

A passer-by who rushed in to help was also attacked, before the suspect was eventually restrained by bystanders.

So What Led To It?

Authorities identified the suspect as an Italian national of Moroccan origin.

Officials also revealed he had previously been referred to mental health services in 2022 for “schizoid disorders,” though he later disappeared from follow-up care.

Eyewitnesses described pure shock. “We saw people flying,” one said, recalling the moment the car accelerated at high speed into the crowd.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella visited the injured in hospital, with Meloni praising a civilian who intervened.

“What makes an ordinary person heroic is the moment when the heart chooses to do good,” she said.

The mayor suggested the act appeared deliberate, while investigators continue to piece together motive and background.

And now the question Italy is left with is uncomfortable but unavoidable.
