Apple Agrees $250m Settlement With iPhone Users Over AI Claims

Apple to pay $250m to US iPhone buyers over AI features lawsuit.

Did Apple promise more than it could deliver?

That’s the question at the heart of a $250 million settlement involving Apple and its much-hyped AI rollout.

The tech giant has agreed to pay certain iPhone users—without admitting fault—after being accused of overselling features under its “Apple Intelligence” banner.

Buyers of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 claimed they were promised cutting-edge AI upgrades, including a smarter, more capable Siri.

But according to the lawsuit, those features either didn’t exist—or weren’t ready when the phones hit the market.

Lawyers didn’t hold back: “Apple promoted AI capabilities that did not exist… if ever.”

AI Hype Risks Rise

Apple, for its part, says the dispute centered on just “two additional features” and chose to settle to stay focused on innovation.

In practical terms, eligible US customers could receive between $25 and $95.

But zoom out for a second—this isn’t just about refunds.

With rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic pushing the boundaries of AI, the pressure is on.

Even CEO Tim Cook has faced criticism over whether Apple is falling behind.

So here’s the bigger question: in the race for AI dominance, is hype becoming just as powerful—and risky—as the technology itself?
