Australia Bans Iranian Visitors For Six Months Amid Middle East War

Australia bans visitors from Iran amid war in the Middle East.

Is Australia closing its doors to Iranian visitors? For the next six months, the answer is yes—at least temporarily.

The government says the ongoing US‑Israeli conflict with Iran has raised the risk that some Iranian visitors might be unable to leave Australia once their short‑term visas expire.

The Department of Home Affairs explained the move is “in the national interest amid rapidly changing global conditions.”

The ban affects Iranians currently outside Australia, even if they hold valid visitor visas.

But not everyone is blocked: those already in the country, people in transit, spouses or children of Australians, and permanent residents are exempt.

“Decisions on who can remain permanently should be made by the government.

Not by the random consequence of who booked a holiday,” Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said.

Australia Faces Backlash

The policy has sparked backlash. The Sydney-based Asylum Seekers Centre called it a “shameful new law.”

It threatens Australia’s protection programs for people seeking safety.

“In the face of an international humanitarian crisis, the government is slamming the door shut,” the group said.

This isn’t the first time Iran-related tensions have affected Australians.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to grant asylum to members of the Iranian women’s football team.

Australia’s Home Affairs Department said its decision to temporarily ban Iranian visitors was in the ‘national interest’.

This was after fears over anthem-related repercussions.

Some team members were granted asylum, though most eventually returned home.

With more than 90,000 Australian residents born in Iran, the ban may leave many wondering.

Is this a cautious safety measure, or a door closing on a community already here?
