A tragic accident has cast a shadow over the tense diplomatic efforts in Egypt.
Three Qatari diplomats were killed and two others injured in a car crash near the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday, Qatar’s embassy confirmed.
The diplomats had been in the Red Sea city for high-stakes talks aimed at brokering a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release.
The discussions have drawn envoys from across the region.
According to Egypt’s Al Qahera News, the crash occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the steering wheel.
Five Qataris and an Egyptian driver were inside the vehicle.
Tragedy Amid Diplomacy
In a statement, Qatar’s embassy in Cairo expressed “deep sorrow and grief.”
The injured diplomats were being treated at Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital.
“The deceased and injured will be transferred to Doha on a Qatari plane today,” the statement read.
Qatar has played a central role in mediating the Gaza truce alongside Egypt and the United States.

It is a delicate diplomatic dance that has stretched on for months.
As Sharm el-Sheikh prepares to host a peace summit chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Sunday’s tragedy is a sobering reminder. Even in diplomacy, fate can strike without warning.
