What would you do if the ground beneath you suddenly roared to life?
That’s exactly what millions in the southern Philippines faced when a massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck early Friday.
It shook homes, cut power, and sent people racing for safety.
Tsunami warnings blared across the Philippines and Indonesia as authorities urged coastal residents to flee to higher ground.
For hours, fear hung heavy—would towering waves follow?
Thankfully, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later confirmed the threat had passed.
Still, the destruction was real. One person was killed, classes were suspended, and power was knocked out across several provinces.
Davao Shaken Hard
In Davao City, patients were wheeled out into parking lots as hospitals trembled.
“It was very strong,” said Davao Oriental governor Edwin Jubahib. “Some buildings were reported damaged.”
For locals like Richie Diuyen, the shock was deeply personal. “I’m still scared,” she told the BBC.
“It was the first time I’ve felt something that strong.”

Experts say it’s part of life on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
As Phivolcs chief Dr. Teresito Bacolcol reminded, “We must accept our reality.”
Earthquakes, eruptions, tsunamis will come. Instead of panicking, we have to prepare.
Because when the Earth reminds us who’s boss, readiness beats fear every time.
