Afghan Taliban Exchanges Two American Prisoners For Terrorist

In a high-stakes exchange brokered by Qatar, the Taliban has freed two American prisoners in return for an Afghan terrorist fighter once imprisoned in the U.S.

The Afghan foreign ministry confirmed on Tuesday that Khan Mohammed, an Afghan fighter serving a life sentence in California, was released and returned to Afghanistan.

Who Are The Released Americans?

Detained nearly two decades ago in Nangarhar province, Mohammed’s freedom came at the cost of two American captives.

Among those freed is Ryan Corbett, whose family expressed immense relief after his 894-day ordeal under Taliban detention.

“Today, our hearts are filled with overwhelming gratitude,” they wrote, acknowledging efforts by both the Biden and Trump administrations.

The second detainee, William McKenty, was also freed, though details about his case remain sparse as his family requested privacy.

Meanwhile, two other Americans, including former airline mechanic George Glezmann and businessman Mahmood Habibi, remain detained in Afghanistan.
