An American citizen, Travis Timmerman, has been flown out of Syria by the US military after months in captivity during the final chaotic days of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The 29-year-old was handed over to US forces in Tanf, near Syria’s borders with Iraq and Jordan, reportedly by Syrian rebels from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group.
But mystery still surrounds his sudden disappearance from Hungary months ago and no one knew he was in Syria.
Why Timmerman is in Syria is Not Certain
The Associated Press confirmed that Timmerman is now in Jordan, where he has met US State Department officials.
Timmerman has since revealed to CBS that he crossed into Syria from Lebanon on a religious “pilgrimage,” describing his captivity as a time of “meditation” and personal growth.
Timmerman has not yet opened up about his disappearance and how he managed to cross to Syria when the country was not safe for foreigners.
