Social media users were shocked to see a Boeing flight bound to China caught fire mid-air during a flight in Rome, Italy.
A Hainan Airlines Boeing 787 with 249 passengers and 16 crew had to make an emergency landing back at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport after an engine caught fire shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft reportedly encountered a bird strike which led to flames in its right engine, local media reports mentioned.
Flight Dumped Fuel Over Sea
To ensure a safe return, the plane dumped fuel over the sea before landing at the same airport from which it took off.
Fortunately, the incident caused no delays to other flights, and all passengers and crew on board remained safe.
Video Goes Viral
A viral video was shared on social media which showed a bird striking the plane while taking off from Rome.
The media didn’t make it clear if the plane made it to its destination after taking off again.
