New York City mayor Eric Adams has urged the residents to use water with caution as the water table is going down beneath the city.
Adams issued a drought watch for the city on Saturday and warned residents to conserve water in response to an exceptionally dry October.
In his announcement, Adams asked residents to take shorter showers, repair leaky faucets, and turn off taps while brushing their teeth.
“Mother Nature is in charge, and so we must make sure we adjust,” the mayor said.
Context of The Warning
The warning comes amid reports suggesting that the October month was the driest for the city in the past 150 years.
Last month’s rainfall in Central Park measured only 0.01 inches—far below the typical October average of 4.4 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, October dryness can have a significant impact on overall food production and next year’s summer.
