Germany has announced the closure of all three Iranian consulates within its borders in response to Iran’s execution of a German citizen.
Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-Iranian national was convicted of terrorism by Tehran and was executed as per the Iranian law.
German foreign ministry said the Iranian embassy will remain open as the closure of consulates was announced in protest.
Germany Recalls Ambassador
Prior to the closure of consulates, the German government recalled its ambassador from Tehran after the execution.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, speaking from New York, criticized Iran for its “hostage diplomacy” and said the relations were already at low between the two countries.
Why Iran Executed Jamshid?
According to the Iran State news agency IRN, Jamshid was involved in planning several terrorist attacks.
The Iranian judiciary didn’t disclose what terrorist attacks Mr. Jamshid was involved in.
Human rights organizations, such as HAWAR, praised Germany’s actions but emphasized the need for a stronger plan to counter Iran.
