Elon Musk Nominated For European Union Award on Freedom of Thought

To everyone’s surprise, Elon Musk has been nominated for the European Union’s freedom of thought award by far-right groups.

The tech-giant and the owner of X, formerly Twitter, is nominated for the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by two far-right groups in the European Parliament.

French lawmaker Thierry Mariani and the Europe of Sovereign Nations group, led by Germany’s far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) supported Musk’s nomination for his efforts to promote free speech.

While the chances of Musk getting the award is fairly low, being nominated for the award raises eyebrows.

Musk, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” has recently faced widespread criticism for his handling of content moderation since acquiring X in 2022.

Critics claim that fake news, hate speech, and disinformation have flourished under his leadership, which has drawn condemnations from global regulators.

The final laureate will be chosen on October 24, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 18 in Strasbourg, with Musk facing strong opposition.
