The Ukrainian army’s top commander has claimed in a video that they have captured 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, talking in a video uploaded by Ukraine’s President’s Telegram account, said the army had successfully captured large swathes of Russian territory in a latest offensive.
The claim was made in reference to Ukraine’s historic offensive in Kursk last week.
121,000 People Displaced
According to the governor of Kursk, Alexei Smirnov, at least 121,000 people were displaced as a result of the attack.
The governor contradicted the claim made by Ukraine’s top commander that 1,000 square kilometers of area had been captured.
Instead the governor said the Ukrainian troops had been able to advance through an area 12 km deep and 40 km wide.
Neither of the statements could be verified by western media who have been covering the event since Ukraine launched the attack on 6 August.
