For the first time, renewable energy production in Italy has outpaced electricity generated from fossil fuels in the first six months of the year, according to power grid operator Terna.
Terna aid that renewables now contributed close to 44% of Italy’s electricity demand, marking a record on a half-year basis.
Italy’s Historic Transition
The historic milestone was achieved on June 22 when green energy production officially peaked at 33.2 gigawatts (GW), the highest ever recorded in Italy.
The achievement underscores Italy’s commitment of increasing renewable electricity production to 63% by 2030.
Fossil Fuel Production Drops
In the first half of the year, renewable energy reached 67.3 terawatt-hours (TWh), while fossil fuel-based power dropped 19% year-on-year to just over 58 TWh.
Terna’s report also highlighted a growth in Italian renewable energy capacity by 3.7 GW in the first half of the year, compared to an increase of 1.1 GW in the same period in 2023.
