Florida Family Sues NASA After Space Debris Hit Home

A family in Naples, Florida, is seeking $80,000 in compensation from NASA after debris from outer space struck their home and caused significant damage.

The law firm Cranfill Sumner announced it filed the claim for Alejandro Otero and his family against the space agency for compensation.

Debris Almost Hit Otero’s Son

The incident occurred on March 8, 2024, when a metallic cylinder slab from a cargo pallet, released by the International Space Station in 2021, crashed into the Otero residence.

The debris created a hole in the roof and floor but did not injure anyone, though it came close to hitting their son Daniel, who was home at the time.

NASA confirmed that the debris was from its flight support equipment after analyzing it at the Kennedy Space Center.

The piece of metal weighed 1.6 pounds and measured about 4 inches by 1.6 inches.

CBS News reported that the agency has six months to respond to the family’s request.
